Our First Free Day

Today we were on our own to explore Kolkata “The City of Heritage”. We saw beautiful things and experienced some of the more bizarre temple rituals. A highlight was hiring a boat to take us across the Hooghly River. We returned to our hotel where we are all catching up on laundry, blogging and answering e-mails.

Some interesting facts about Kolkata:
Population: 15 million
6 million people come into the city everyday to work
It is 40 sq. miles
80% are literate
12% are alcoholics
It is home to 5 Nobel Prize winners
There are 2000 temples and 55 churches
The city has 84,000 taxis (who all seem to drive at once)
Everyone blows their horns when they drive
48 languages are spoken
